What are Area Rugs?

Area rugs, also known as carpets, have originated somewhere along central and west Asia. This is probably why your mind quickly flashes to the words Persia, sand, and Aladdin whenever you hear someone say carpet or area rug.

The first area rugs were probably made of sheep’s and goat’s wool and were either hand made or woven by ancient women of the time’s civilization. Even the most ancient area rug discovered in Siberia already having intricate patterns and designs, which means, even then, carpets are a representation of skills, culture, and wealth.

Area rugs are used to protect and cover the floors. Area rugs and carpets may be used interchangeably, though some will argue that carpets should only pertain to the textile covering an entire room of the house (wall-to-wall) while area rugs are those that can only cover a specific area measurement.

Area rugs can also act as a décor by enhancing your house’s features and adding a pop of color in a room.

What to Look For

Modern area rugs are made with synthetic fibers (nylon, polyester, and polypropylene) although area rugs made of wool still exists, albeit, a lot more expensive than the common household carpet.

They can be made either by hand or machine weaving, though, obviously, hand woven area rugs will not come cheap.

It might sound like an overkill, but you must learn how to choose the correct area rug for your room. An area rug can either make or break a room. It can either make it fab or drab. What is worse, decent area rugs costs a couple of hundred bucks depending on the style, make, and size so if you happen to choose the wrong area rug then that’s just money down the drain.

Stylists and interior decorators will tell you, choose the color first. The color of the area rug can dictate the color scheme, design, and decoration of any room.

If your room is already made and you just thought to add an area rug to be stylish, don’t fret. It might be difficult, but not entirely impossible to get the perfect rug. Just remember to TRY the area rug color first on your floor before making your purchase. After all, area rugs are too big and returning them just because they don’t agree with your color scheme will be a burden.

If your room already has too much color, try a solid neutral color to balance things out. If your furnishing and walls are already neutral, then go for wild, brightly colored designs that will make the room pop.

The next consideration is the size. Don’t put an area rug that can only cover within fifteen inches radius of your coffee table because that would be pointless. Choose a rug that can fit an entire seating area, or at least, cover the front legs of your sofa so your feet will touch the carpet, not the floor. The purpose of an area rug is to insulate your feet from the hard, cold concrete and you can only do that by purchasing a rug appropriate for the size of the room.

Standard area rug sizes usually come within the range of 4 to 12 feet in length and 6 to 14 feet in width. Measure the room you want to place your area rug in and buy one that will fit.

Price is not a big factor in buying area rugs. Even if you bought the plushest and most expensive area rug your favorite store can offer, if it does not look good in your space then it probably won’t do you any good.
