What is a lighter?

Using a lighter is the most convenient and easiest way to produce fire. They are small, portable and cheap, so anyone can bring them in their pouch or pockets at any time. Lighters may either have a metal or plastic body, but one thing is for sure, they contain flammable gas to ignite flames whenever the user wants to.

The idea of lighters originally came from lamps, when they used to be lighted by fire. Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner, a German chemist invented the first ever lighter around 1823. His invention was called the “Dobereiner’s lamp”, which contains flammable gas, sulfuric acid and hydrogen to create flames in an instant.

Dobereiner’s invention was pretty heavy and kind of dangerous, so it was only sold to minority. The lamp can be used at any time, but it can also produce unexpected explosions. The next successor of this invention is none other than matches. John Walker, an English chemist invented the first ever matches around 1826. At that time, matches were preferable when it comes to producing “instant fire.”

From 1826 to 1844, several innovations about matches were invented, but still none for lighters. In 1903 however, Carl Auer von Welsback created portable and smaller lighters that uses flint to create instant flames. He used ferrocerium that creates sparks whenever it is scratched. Welsback produced an innovative upgrade that his invention is still used today.

After the invention of ferrocerium, several companies around the world started manufacturing good lighters. This time, their lighters were either loaded with naphtha, kerosene or gasoline. At 1932, a company called Zippo created handy lighters with an improved case and windproof, so the flame won’t disappear so easily.

Of course, like any other invention, another company leveled up to Zippo’s lighters and created an automatic lighter. The Ronson Company created a lighter called the “banjo”, so users can create flames just by pressing a button. Also, instead of naptha, the company used butane to load their lighters. Today, the main sources of our lighters are butane, thanks to the company of Ronson.

What to look for in a lighter?

As you can see, lighters have a long history that it’s almost impossible to keep up. As of today, we can identify at least 4 types of lighters available in the market today. These lighters may work and may not work for you, it all really depends which type of lighter is perfect for your lifestyle.

Disposable lighters – are most probably the cheapest lighters for sale. Disposable lighters are very easy to distinguish; they usually have structures made out of plastic. Furthermore, they are often seen in shops or convenient stores as they are very inexpensive in terms of price. This one typically uses a rotating wheel and a button to ignite flames.

Butane torch lighters – uses butane fuel and piezoelectricity to form a spark. Butane torch lighters usually contain powerful flames and may only be flamed out if the button isn’t pressed. This type of lighter is highly ideal to light bonfires and wood chunks as opposed to flaming a normal cigarette.

Classic lighters – are the first ever modernized lighters, also known as the Zippo Lighters. These lighters are famous for having a body made out of metal with a cup. Zippo lighters are particularly recognized for their “windproof” feature. Moreover, these kinds of lighters are known to be extremely durable that lasts for a long time.

Electrical lighters – are the newest kind of lighters that instead of flames, produces high level of electricity to create heat. This one is usually rechargeable and only uses USB to refuel. They are eco-friendly because it doesn’t use butane or flammable gas. Since it only has small space for electricity, this type of lighter is intended specifically for cigarettes.
