What is Nail Polish?

A nail polish mostly consists of an organic polymer solution in volatile organic solvent. It is mainly used to decorate and protect human nails.

They are painted either on toenails or fingernails (or both) to create a thin colored film that hardens as the volatile solvent evaporates to the air. The basic formulation of a nail polish includes, but are not limited to: (1) dyes and pigments for glitter and color; (2) plasticizers to create a flexible, non-cracking film; (3) adhesive polymer to make the film stick to the nail’s surface; (4) thickening agents to keep it viscous; and (5) UV stabilizer so it won’t change colors even after long exposure to light.

There are four basic types of nail polish. The base coat is a clear nail polish solution that is specifically formulated to be applied directly to nails before coating it with the colored lacquer. The base coat protects and strengthens the nails while also prepping it for painting.

Its partner, the top coat, is also a clear nail polish that is formulated specifically for application after painting the nails with the colored nail lacquer. It prevents your applied nail polish from cracking, chipping, or peeling and can also help the applied colored nail polish to dry quickly.

The colored polishes are divided into matte and gel. Depending on your wanted nail finish, both types can do the job of painting and decorating your nails rather well.

Beyond the regular solid colors, nail polishes are also available in shimmer, glitter, frost, crème, iridescent, opalescent, crackled, glass-flecked, jelly, translucent, and much more.

What to Look For

As always, with any cosmetic product, finding out the right nail polish color is just a matter of matching it with your skin tone. As a rule, those with fair skin will do well to choose dark colors while those blessed with dark-colored skin will have to choose either dark red, nude or classic shades.

You can also depend your color choice on your planned outfit, the occasion/event you are about to attend, the season, or the current fashion trend. The good thing about nail polishes is that they can easily be removed, repaired, or color changed depending on the situation. You don’t even have to worry about potential irritation as nail polishes rarely (if ever) touches skin.

Even so, most users tend to look out for these three chemicals to help them decide whether to stay away from a color or polish brand. Nail polishes that contain DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde tend to turn most consumers off.

DBP (or dibutyl phthalate) has already been banned in several household items, like children’s toys, for instance, as it is a well-known hormone disruptor. Toluene, on the other hand, is a regulated chemical affects your central nervous system while formaldehyde is documented to cause cancer. The presence of these chemicals, though in relatively small dosages, is enough to scare potential buyers away.

The colored lacquers can come in a gel or matte finish. The gel type is becoming more popular these days as it is more resistant to chipping or cracking than regular nail polishes.

The problem with gel nail polishes is that it is rather a hassle to apply and remove. Also, it requires a UV LED lamp in order to cure. If you are planning to get your manicure and pedicure by yourself, it is not advisable to use gel nail polish as this does not cure until you get them under UV light and will remain sticky if applied wrongly.

The more regular matte nail polish has a rather dull finish compared to gel, but this can be quickly remedied by applying a top coat over it to make it shiny. Matte colored nail polishes are mainly used in nail art designs with matte and shiny surfaces blended to create a nice piece of artful nail symmetry.
