What is a Nonstick Cookware?

Cooking utensils has tremendously helped the lives of the modern people by making the process of cooking quicker and healthier. Like many other inventions, cooking items comes in different types and forms and one of them is a nonstick cookware. But, what exactly are nonstick cookwares and why are they so popular? We have the answer for that.

Nonstick cookwares have non-stick surface to lessen the possibility of having foods and other stuff sticking into it. The non-stick materials are called polytetrafluoroethylene or Teflon, which is a popular brand in the market. Many of you might think that non-stick elements were only invented a decade ago, but historians believed that the Mycenaean Greeks used to work on non-stick pans about 3,000 years ago.

The modern non-stick material was however invented by Roy Plunkett, a scientist from Ohio. After completing his PhD, Plunkett went to New Jersey and started working with DuPoint to work with different kinds of refrigerants such as ammonia and sulphur oxide. One time, Dr. Plunkett along with his assistant whose name is Jack Rebok experimented with a new refrigerant called tetrafluorethylene.

He and his assistant started placing the tetrafluorethylene in small cylinders to check how it went. They opened the cylinders and were disordered as to why nothing came out yet it’s still full because of its weight. Confused by the result, Dr. Plunkett and Rebok sliced the cylinders open only to discover that the tetrafluorethylene had transformed into white and waxy powder, which is the polytetrafluoroethylene resin.

After discovering this new finding, Plunkett began running tests to see its useful properties. As a result, Plunkett was able to enter the National Inventors Hall of Fame. 3 years after studying about it, DuPoint trademarked this discovery and named it Teflon. During its first few years, Teflon was only used for military and industrial uses such as insulation for electrical wires and as a repellent for fabrics. Around 1960s, Teflon began being marketed as a coating for pans.

According to our research, almost 90% of all aluminium cookware were coated with non-stick coating. They’re loved by many patrons because they’re extremely simple to use. It can make the stickiest food slide off the pan with ease. Today, the material “Teflon” isn’t just used in pans, but also in aerospace applications and wires of computers.

What to look for when buying a nonstick cookware?

In spite of its astonishing capabilities, all nonstick cookware aren’t the same, which is why you have to have standards when it comes to buying non-stick cookwares. Whether you’re planning to buy an expensive set or a very affordable one, you still have to look for these features and check if it fits your preferences and lifestyle. To understand more, read the following factors below.

  • Non-stick coating – plays a huge role in nonstick cookwares, after all, how will your non-stick items work without it? There are many types of non-stick coating done in several types of cookware such as cast irons, enamel, glass and ceramic cookware. In other non-stick coating, some are infused with diamond crystals to make it extremely scratch and rust resistant. Moreover, the diamond coating is easier to be pre-heated yet lighter in weight. To know if the coating is a good catch, look for brands that have proven to be resilient even after being used for so many times.
  • Handles – what kind of cookware would it be if they don’t have handles attached in them? A good handle/s is riveted perfectly and must be attached to the body right. They usually range from having a full metal body, plastic, rubberized or silicone coated, so it’s easier to hold even after cooking in high heat.
  • Body – is the body tough enough to handle your cooking loads? Then you must deeply think about your non-stick body. Most of the products listed in this list are made from aluminium that’s been hard- Although there are still other nonstick cookware made from cast iron or glass.
  • Rivets – makes sure that your handles and cookware’s body is intact, on that note, it’s important to go after rivets that are deeply attached and doesn’t rumble as you move the cookware you’re using. Going for items with unsure rivets could potentially cause accidents such as hot contents spills.
  • Rim – if you’re all about pouring sauce and making liquid based meals then you must get cookwares with slightly rolled rims. If you’re all about tossing ingredients however, you must opt for the ones with straight edges, so the ingredients won’t easily fall off.
  • Core – most cookwares are made with multiple layers of metals as their core. Some are made of full stainless steel, while others infuse or combine copper together with it so you get the best of both worlds.
  • Lids – although not all cookware sets offer lids with their product, but it’s still a helpful product considering that it also tremendously help adding flavour to your nonstick cookware. There are metal based lids, but the most popular ones are those made from glass. Glass lids aren’t a necessity, but it helps a lot for the cook to monitor their meals.
  • Base – even though gas stovetops are still the number 1 choice in most parts of the world, induction ranges are slowly making its way to the top, as it’s a common equipment in major cities of America, Western Europe and certain parts of Asia. Cookwares that are flat based makes it compatible with smooth electric ranges, induction ranges on the other hand require materials that are magenetic based that responds to magnetic field.
  • Heat Conductivity – is how your cookware is able to take heat easily. All metals are different, but some are better heat conductors that others. For example, copper is a very good heat receiver that both ceramic, stainless steels and cast irons.
  • Price – it’s been a universal knowledge that the price of a product will most likely determine its durability and long lastingness. But, this is not to assume that all expensive items are good while affordable products are bad. As a good rule of thumb, it’s recommended to go after cookwares that are within your budget.
  • Weight – this feature cannot be ruled as universal because it depends on the user which is better for them. Heavier cookware allows its base to have some time to achieve an even heated core. Lighter weight cookwares on the other hand consume heat faster, but they can easily be manoeuvred especially if you’re into tossing ingredients in the air.
  • Ease of cleaning – sure, it says that it’s dishwasher safe, but to increase your non-stick cookware’s life, you’ll have to wash them by hand. With that information, go for the ones that require minimal assistance in cleaning. It will also contribute a lot if you can go for scratch resistant items. Although you don’t have to worry much about this feature because the main feature of all non-stick cookware is to make your lives a lot easier.
  • Durability – is what determines whether a product is worth purchasing or not. It’s given that the toughest material out there would be cast iron, but also the heaviest and hardest to clean. Moreover, they also require oil to be useful unless they’re coated specially. The next front runner would be aluminium that’s been hard anodized. It’s also not as heavy as cast iron and easier to take care of because they’re less expensive. Copper on the other hand requires high maintenance and is also very expensive.
  • Warranty – is often not prioritize by most buyers, but it’s definitely a benefit. Some companies offer limited warranty or lifetime warranty as long as the purchase is valid and is still within the time limit.

How to UseNonstick Cookwares?
